Indeed, a very big weekend it was in Vancouver. Not only was it the first weekend of the 2010 Winter Olympics, but also coincidentally Valentine's Day AND Chinese New Year's!
Opening of the 2010 Olympics-
Now, I have never been "pro-Olympics". In fact, if anything, I think I have been ambivalent about having it in our city. Friday, February 12th was the first official day of the opening. Since I work downtown, right in the middle of it, I really did not know what to expect on that first morning. As my bus crept along Burrard, getting closer to Robson, I could feel the energy, and feel the excitement of an already growing crowd. My bus had to let us off about 5 blocks away from where he would normally drop us off, due to the torch coming through Robson Street at that moment. Sure enough, once I walked up to Robson Street, the torch was running right past me! Standing there in the crowd at 8:30 in the morning, I really did not expect to have all the emotions that I did. It could be my pregnancy hormones (as I am bawling over everything these days!), but I felt such a sense of PRIDE. Despite all my quiet objections about the Olympics before, it was difficult to ignore the energy all around me. I only wished that I had my camera with me to take some pictures!
Chinese New Year's- The Year of the Tiger-
Gung hei fat choy! This is the Year of the Tiger. If you believe in Chinese Astology, here are some of the traits are little baby is to possess, born in the Year of the Tiger.
"Tiger personality traits
One of the most dynamic signs in the Chinese zodiac, Tigers are by turns fascinating, commanding, and exasperating.
They are patient but short-tempered, calm but rebellious, petty but noble, fearsome but affectionate, free spirits but fiercely territorial."
Already, by looking at some of these traits, I think our baby will end up taking more after me! Either way, we are thrilled and will love our baby unconditionally.
Valentine's Day-
Valentine's Day was kicked off for me on Friday, February 12th when Jonas sent some beautiful orchids to my work. He is such a romantic! I honestly was not expecting them, but loved them all the same. Because I still had quite a bit of nausea on the weekend, we were quite limited in our outings. We did manage to go for a 'couple's massage' at Beverly's on 4th Avenue, where we were both pampered for an hour. I wanted to take pictures of us in our robes, but Jonas wasn't so fond of that idea :)
Telling Our Families-
True to our word, we told our families about our special Chinese New Year's surprise! Both families could not have been more thrilled, and we were so overjoyed with their reactions. This will be the first grandchild on the Ng side. As for the Lee side, we have not had a baby in the family for over 14 years, so this is equally exciting! This baby will be sooo loved by everybody, and that is all we hope for. A healthy baby that is loved.
