For months (endless months it feels like), our city has been immersed in the Stanley Cup finals. It all came to an end last night, when Boston Bruins beat us at 4-0, and in our own city nonetheless. I have not been an avid watcher of hockey, but I caught the fever, and watched the last three games. Even Griffin had been watching it with us, with what looked like intense interest. And although we lost last night's game, I was not prepared for the pictures I saw the next day.
People broke out in riots last night, and the pictures I saw were sickening, disgusting, and filled me with uneasiness. I remembered the last time we rioted. I don't think anybody thought it would happen again. True, it only takes a few bad apples to do this (and make all Vancouverites look bad), but what on earth is the point??? Just over a year ago, I saw a city come together during the Olympics and show some pride. Even during the playoffs, the camraderie was there again. I had even said to Jonas last night that Vancouver has had some exciting times the last couple of years, with the Olympics and now the Stanley Cup. And then to wake up the next day and see how it all played out....horrible. All I could think about was thank goodness I didn't have to commute downtown for work, because I think surveying the damage would have really bothered me.
Anyways, it really is a shame that this has made our city look completely classless. I want Griffin to grow up in a city that he can be proud of, and I think for the most part, he will feel proud of Vancouver.
On a side note, tooth number five for Griffin is making its way.
